Welcome to SAR Times, a mostly-weekly newsletter dedicated to the Search and Rescue (SAR) profession worldwide. We monitor major SAR operations across all domains, from land to sea and even space (when/if they happen).

It’s our goal to stay current on changes in laws, policies, and technology related to conducting global SAR operations and share those updates. We know firsthand how hard it can be to find time to keep current on changes and major operations.

Who we are

As of today (April 13, 2025), we are I, Ryan Erickson.

Ryan is a retired United States Coast Guard Response Office with over 15 years of direct Search and Rescue experience, from planning to execution to writing national policy. He ended his career with the Coast Guard on a high note, just finishing the most recent update to the Coast Guard Atlantic Area Search and Rescue Policy, the formation of the Service’s first Federal Search and Rescues Coordination Group (FSARCG) (ESF-9), and editing the 2020 version of the US Coast Guard SAR Addendum.

Ryan is currently Chief of Staff of the non-profit group International Association of Search and Rescue Controllers (IASARC).
