Privacy Policy

SAR Times respects user privacy and handles personal information in a way that supports publishing operations, newsletter delivery, site administration, and legal compliance.

Information We Collect

SAR Times may collect the following categories of information:

  • Contact information, including name and email address, is collected when a user subscribes to a newsletter, contacts SAR Times, or signs up for updates.
  • Technical and usage information, including IP address, browser type, device information, referring pages, pages viewed, timestamps, and similar analytics data collected through cookies, pixels, logs, or analytics tools.
  • Communication records, including messages sent through contact forms, email, or other support channels.
  • Preference data, including newsletter subscription choices, consent records, and email delivery preferences.

How Information Is Used

SAR Times may use collected information to:

  • Deliver newsletters, updates, and other requested communications.
  • Operate, maintain, secure, and improve the website.
  • Monitor readership, engagement, and site performance.
  • Maintain records of consent, opt-outs, and subscriber preferences.
  • Comply with legal obligations and enforce site terms.
  • Reduce unnecessary email distribution and related platform costs by managing inactive subscriber records.

Newsletter and Email Status

When a person subscribes to a SAR Times newsletter, their account or subscriber record may remain active even if they do not open newsletters for an extended period.

SAR Times may review subscriber engagement data, such as opens, clicks, or similar email activity, to identify inactive newsletter recipients. If a subscriber does not open newsletters for a defined period, SAR Times may change that subscriber's email status to "do not send" or a similar suppression status in order to reduce mailing costs, improve list hygiene, and avoid sending unwanted messages. Updates to send status will be completed every 60 days.

A "do not send" status does not necessarily mean the subscriber account is deleted. It means SAR Times may retain the subscriber record, consent history, and related administrative data while stopping routine newsletter delivery unless the subscriber later re-subscribes, updates preferences, or otherwise asks to resume emails.

Where required by applicable law, SAR Times will rely on consent, legitimate interests, contract, or other lawful bases for processing personal information.

For newsletter communications, SAR Times will keep records showing when and how a subscriber signed up, what they agreed to receive, and when they unsubscribed or changed preferences.

Cookies and Analytics

SAR Times may use cookies, pixels, analytics services, and similar technologies to understand site traffic, measure newsletter performance, remember preferences, and improve the user experience.

As of June 29, 2026, SAR Times uses an open-source analytics software (Umami) and Mailgun to send emails to subscribers.

Sharing of Information

SAR Times may share personal information with service providers that support website hosting, newsletter delivery, analytics, security, payment processing, or other business operations, but only as reasonably necessary for those services.

SAR Times may also disclose information when required by law, to respond to legal process, to protect rights or safety, or in connection with a merger, sale, or transfer of assets.

SAR Times will not sell personal information.

Data Retention

SAR Times will retain personal information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including newsletter administration, consent management, analytics, security, legal compliance, and dispute resolution.

For subscriber data, SAR Times may retain active subscriber information while consent remains valid and while the subscriber continues to engage with emails or site services. Inactive subscriber data may be retained long enough to confirm inactivity, maintain suppression lists, document consent and opt-out choices, conduct limited re-engagement efforts, and support compliance obligations.

Even when newsletter delivery is stopped, and an email status is changed to "do not send," SAR Times may keep limited records necessary to ensure that the subscriber is not accidentally re-added to mailing campaigns and to document prior consent and suppression decisions.

User Choices and Rights

Users may:

  • Unsubscribe from marketing emails by using the unsubscribe link in a message.
  • Request updates to their subscriber information or communication preferences.
  • Ask about access, correction, deletion, or portability rights where those rights apply under law.
  • Request information about how personal data is used, disclosed, or retained.

Contact the site editor, Ryan Erickson, via [email protected] for requests or questions.

SAR Times will use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect personal information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, alteration, or disclosure.

No method of internet transmission or electronic storage is completely secure; we make no promises regarding the absolute security of your data. That said, as of the date of this policy, this site is self-hosted by the editor, and he does not want anything wonky on his own computer. He is defending it as best as possible.
